About Us

1st Stoke-on-Trent & Newcastle, St. Andrew’s Porthill Scout Group

The Scout Troop in Porthill started sometime during the late summer or early autumn of 1908, so we are only a year younger than Scouting itself. We were, in fact, one of the first Scout Troops in the area (Hanley YMCA were first), and because of a slight administrative mix up our full title is 1st City Stoke-on-Trent & Newcastle, St. Andrew’s Porthill Scouts.

In the Great War, World War 1, the Group lost twelve of its past members. Click the Porthill Scouts Remembrance Page link on the left hand side menu to visit our on-line memorial to them. This also commemorates the member of the Group who died in the Second World War.

In the early 1930′s we gained a Cub Pack and this is how things remained until the mid 1960′s when the Scout Troop closed due to lack of Leaders. The Cubs soldiered on, any Cubs wanting to join Scouts went to our close friends at 50th Bradwell, until 1983 when one of our old Cubs came and offered to restart the Scout Troop. Since then we have started Venture Unit and a Beaver Colony.

Unfortunately, we had to close the Scout Section in September 2005, again, due to the lack of Leaders. Happily, the Troop started again in March 2007.

In January 2006, our close neighbours, 50th Bradwell had to close it’s doors, so we invited their Beavers and Cubs to join us. We are happy to report that the majority did so,

Today all sections are progressing well. We have large Beaver, Cub and Scout sections. We are always on the look out for new Leaders for each of the sections.

If anyone is interested in joining us, please click on the Contact Us button and you will be put in touch with the relevant leaders.

If anyone has any information about the history of the Group, we would be pleased to hear from you.
