{"id":24638,"date":"2018-11-14T11:00:26","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T11:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/porthillscouts.org.uk\/site\/?p=24638"},"modified":"2018-11-14T09:27:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-14T09:27:51","slug":"we-remembered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/porthillscouts.org.uk\/site\/2018\/11\/14\/we-remembered\/","title":{"rendered":"We Remembered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the past weekend, members of the Group have taken part in events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Saturday, St. Andrews Church held its second open day to celebrate the restoration of the War Memorial.\u00a0 Were were pleased to be joined by Newcastle District&#8217;s Deputy District Commissioner, Dave, who awarded two Chief Scout Gold Awards to 2 Scouts and two Long Service Awards to 2 members of our Executive Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Drums played at the beginning of the day and in their set, they played the tune &#8216;General Salute&#8217;. This was played in St. Andrews Church on the original Armistice Day in 1918 by the drum and bugles of our Scouts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IhQrkTd89iM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the drums played, the War Memorial was rededicated by Rt Revd Geoff Annas, Bishop of Stafford with\u00a0The Worshipful the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme Councillor Gill Heesom in attendance as well. As part of the rededication, the names\u00a0 on the Memorial were read out by our GSL.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.porthillscouts.me.uk\/2018\/2018-11-10-Rededication-of-the-War-Memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photos can be seen in our gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Group also had on display, by our own <a href=\"https:\/\/remember.porthillscouts.org.uk\/site\/the-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">War Memorial and commemorative window<\/a>, information about all our Scouts killed in the First World War.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Sunday, Remembrance Day itself, we paraded from Bradwell, stopping at the Porthill War Memorial for the Act of Remembrance and 2 minutes silence, then on the Wolstanton War Memorial, for another Act of Remembrance and finally to Basford. We were joined by the Basford and St. Wulstan&#8217;s Scouts, Centurion Explorers, Porthill and Wolstanton&#8217;s Guides and Bradwell&#8217;s Boys Brigade. We were also joined for the first part of the parade by an American WW2 3 ton truck!
