The Group has just come back from Newcastle District’s Centenary Celebration camp at Kibblestone.

The Leaders went out to the camp on the Thursday evening to put up all the tents, so there was more time for activities on the Friday!

The Cubs & Scouts came out to the camp on Friday evening, said goodbye to Mums and Dads and got settled into their Tents.  After the opening ceremony, there was a wide game and then supper. Lights out came and went and there wasn’t a lot of sleeping.

After being woken at 5.00 am by someone from our District chopping wood (!) and revallie from our Merseyside neighbours at 6.30 am we were all up and at breakfast at 7.30 am! This at least meant the Cubs and Scouts were able to have a good session on the rope swing before flag break.

At flag break, Nick invested John and four Scouts into the Group.

The morning’s activities for the Cubs were archery and rock climbing. Some Cubs were lucky and got to go in some Canadian Canoes as well! The Scouts went to bases including the water balloon catapult and making their own fire lighting sticks.

Just after lunch some of the Beavers joined us for the rest of the day. They went off and did activities especially for them, including real life table football! The Cubs went round the different Group bases and made paper towers and made their own dough nuts. The Scouts went and made their own rafts (just as well they’d recently learnt some knots and lashings!) and then sailed them – some more successfully than others! After drying out they then went racing pedal cars.

Tea was a hog roast, followed by a wide game, the lighting of the Centenary Beacon, the District Campfire (the Beavers went home after this) and supper. Everyone slept a lot better on Saturday night!

The rain started on Saturday night and we woke Sunday morning to a very soggy campsite. After breakfast and a Scouts Own in the Fox Glenn, the Cubs and Scouts went off on the ADC’s challenge while the Leaders started to pack up a very wet camp!

Lunch followed and then it was time for parents to pick up the slightly damps and tired Cubs and Scouts! All had a great time and enjoyed the activities they did.

Many thanks to the District Team for arranging it and to all of Porthill’s Leaders for their hard work over the weekend.
