DSC00499 (Large)This year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the start of the First World War and over the next few months (4 years?) up to Remembrance Day there will be a lot said about that war. However, yesterday Monday 4th August 2014 was the 100th anniversary of Britain’s entry to the Great War. It was marked by the Lights Out campaign which was inspired by the words of Sir Edward Grey, who was the Foreign Secretary at the start of the War –

The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.

For Lights Out everyone in the country was encourage to turn off all their lights between 10 & 11pm and leave just a single light or candle on.

As part of this, a number of the Group’s Leaders along with one of the Cubs and two Scouts went to Porthill’s War Memorial to remember those killed in and those who served and returned from the Great War. They laid the section flags on the Memorial and placed a bunch of flowers on it.

While there, an ex Bradwell Scout who is in the RAF Reserve was walking past and asked if she could join in.

The 23 members of our Troop who were killed in action in both the First World War and Second World War are commemorated here.
