On Friday some of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts went to watch Potteries North District’s Gang show, Burdi Boys. In the cast were Beaver Leader Rachael (she was also Assistant Producer), Scout Leader Paul and one of the Scouts.
A slight historical aside here, Burdi Boys was started in 1958 by Bur(slem) Di(strct), of which our Group was a member. The show continued during the time of Potteries Central (again we were members until the Districts changed in 2005) up to the present day when it is run by Potteries North District, so by our members joining in the show, they are carrying what Porthill Scouts have been doing for over 50 years.
The show opened with a song and dance number, which we sponsored, ‘Life’s a Happy Song’ for the film The Muppets. This set the tone for the show. After, the Beavers, always the stars of the first half of the show, came on to sing.
A notable part of the first half came when District Commissioner Jackie came on to say that the show’s nominated charity was The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Instead of raising money for one night, money was raised during all performances. After Jackie had explained this, the female cast all sang ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen especially for a little girl, Daisy, who has cystic fibrosis. The show managed to raise around £837.

The second half started with the cast singing and dancing as pirates. This had the added bonus of seeing Paul dressed up like Captain Jack Sparrow, which caused our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders to laugh out very loudly (we could have sworn Rachael heard us and was trying not to crack up herself!).
More excellent sketches and song and dance numbers followed, the highlight of which was the Potteries version of Hamlet, Omlette!
The show ended with the Burdi Boys theme tune and the traditional gang show song ‘Crest of a Wave’.
This was another excellent Burdi Boys, which all our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders enjoyed. Thanks to the cast and crew for putting on such a great show!
At this point we should mention that Paul fell and damaged his wrist during Saturday’s matinee performance. He performed in the last show on Saturday evening and then went to A&E to find he has a possible fractured wrist. He showed that ‘The Show Must Go On!’. Well done Paul and we hope it heals soon.
